Love Island bosses have denied claims that axed contestant Joe Garratt is being kept in a safehouse after being dumped from the ITV dating show.

It comes after there was a backlash against his behaviour towards Lucie Donlan, which saw him comment on how Lucie is not as 'close' to the girls in the villa and criticising her "strange" and "disrespectful" friendship with fellow islander Tommy Fury.

Issuing a statement to Closer Online, the spokesperson for the programme said, "No he’s not in a safe house. He’s in the same accommodation that all of the dumped islanders stay in."

News that Joe was in a safehouse came earlier today after reports that producers were warning him of the backlash, Womens Aid’s statement and of the hundreds of Ofcom complaints that have been sent into the TV watchdog.

It was also reported that the show’s bosses have even cancelled Joe’s post-dumping interviews in order to protect him further.

Commenting on the story, an Ofcom spokesperson said the regulator still needs to decide whether to investigate the complaints, but have said they will "assess these complaints against our broadcasting rules".

Love Island have also released a statement explaining the show's welfare members have been speaking to Lucie's mum, before adding, "We have always ensured that the families of the Islanders have the contact details of key members of our production team and there is always an open line of communication".

"We have always offered support to families where appropriate and when requested".
