Patrick Monahan

Patrick Monahan - Rewind Selector 90s at the Gilded Balloon Teviot Nightclub, 8pm.

Patrick Monahan compares life as an Irish/Iranian teenager in 90's Cool Britannia to today's Teen Brexit Britain.

Monahan's new stand-up show is about what life was like growing up in Britain during the 1990's as an Irish/Iranian immigrant whose family had come over from Iran a decade earlier. As identity cards and ‘Cool Britannia’ were being introduced, Monahan found himself on the periphery as a teenager - trying to blend in but ending up with all the other ethnic groups!

This is the 3rd in a series of biographical shows in which Patrick talks about his life as an immigrant and follows ‘The Disco Years’ 2015 and ‘That 80’s Show’ 2016.

‘Rewind Selector 90’s’ is about identity, fitting in and enjoying the decade.

‘Drink and drugs and rock n’roll’ was the trade mark saying of the 1990's but for the tea total and drug free Monahan it was ‘Cake and tea and R n’B!’ He still went to all night raves with his friends, but instead of party drugs he used fun size milky ways and mars bars to keep his energy levels up so he could dance all night! Monahan also explores what life was like for teenagers in the 90’s growing up with basic technology unlike teenagers today who are growing up with technology that’s more powerful than a NASA space ship in the 1960's

Gary Lamont

Gary Lamont - Dropping the Soap - Gilded Balloon at Rose Theatre (Venue 76) , 8:45pm

After eight years on BBC's River City, Gary's leaving his role as hairdresser Robbie behind. But is he destined to be an international showgirl following in the footsteps of Kylie? Or will he be flogging yoghurt Martine McCutcheon style? Join him for a down and dirty hour of soapy comedy and music. Total sell-out run 2016. ‘Jam-packed with laughter and song’ **(TheEdinburghReporter.co.uk). ‘The standout show of the 2016 Fringe’ (Greenock Telegraph). ‘Buckets of charm and hilarity; Gary's a joyous revelation’ (Graham Norton).

Jamie Macdowall & Tom Thumb

Jamie MacDowell and Tom Thum - Assembly George Square Studios, 8pm

Peanut butter and jam. Bacon and pancakes. Sometimes stuff that shouldn't go together, just does? Wry folk-pop songs and virtuosic beat-boxing? Meet Jamie Macdowell and Tom Thum - the salty-sweet duo "redefining musical parameters" (NOUSE).

Tom Thum is a world renowned beatbox artist. His TED talk, Beatbox Brilliance, is the most watched of all time, sitting at a cool 58.6 million views (at time of print). Recently, his YouTube series Live from The Larynx has gained a lot of attention - where you can find out miscroscopically how in the hell he is making those noises. Jamie's songs are warm, wry, witty observations blending cool beach folk with old-school hip-hop. Together, they have taken their unique sound across the globe, from Glastonbury in the UK, to Park Acoustics in South Africa, Zermatt Festival in Switzerland, Falls Festival, and Underbelly Hong Kong.

Returning to Edinburgh Festival Fringe for the first time since 2014, songwriter Jamie and beatboxer Tom, like Pikachu becoming Raichu, have reached their next evolution. New songs, a new live setup, and a bigger sound from two artists who really bring out the best in each other.

This is a show that eschews cynicism, exudes joy, and defies expectations. A funny, riotous ruckus that just works, even if you can't work out why
