Exactly a week after wowing The Oscars, Lady Gaga swapped the glitz and the glamour for a sub-zero challenge on Sunday morning (1st March).

Together with her fiancĆ© Taylor Kinney, Gaga braved outside temperatures of -7C to plunge into the icy waters of Chicagoā€™s Lake Michigan.

The happy couple were among 4,500 participants taking part in the annual Polar Plunge charity event in aid of the Special Olympics.

Gaga ditched her infamous headline-grabbing outfits for a more practical black t-shirt and legging for the challenge.

Screaming, she clung onto Taylor as they both dipped their bodies into the freezing waters in tandem. Gagaā€™s weave froze almost immediately as she came out of the water.

Testament to how cold the water is, more than 85% of the lake is currently covered in ice.

Sharing photos of the feat on Instagram, Gaga wrote: ā€œ(It) feels so good to do things for a good cause like the Special Olympics. It's great to donate money, but also great to donate a gesture of love for those who deserve to be showered with it.ā€

She added: ā€œMy weave froze!! Taylor gave me his hat I thought my wig was gonna freeze into and become one with the lake.ā€

Mother Monster wasnā€™t the only celebrity taking part in the challenge ā€“ actor and Chicago native Vince Vaughn also took part while wearing the outfit of the cityā€™s hockey team The Blackhawks.

This yearā€™s Polar Plunge raised more than $1million (Ā£650,000) for the Special Olympics.
