Rogue One is set for release on 16th December
Star Wars producers have announced the name of a new stand-alone film, to be directed by Brit Gareth Edwards.
The new film, which will be called Rogue One, is the first in a series of movies that will explore characters and events beyond the core Star Wars story.
Theory of Everything actress Felicity Jones has been confirmed for the film, although no details of her character have been revealed.
The idea for the story of ‘Rogue One’ came from John Knoll, who will executively produce alongside Simon Emanuel ('The Dark Knight Rises' and 'Fast & Furious 6') and Jason McGatlin ('Tintin' and 'War Of The Worlds').
The film will start shooting in London this summer and is set for release on 16th December 2016.
In addition, it has also been confirmed that Rhian Johnson will write and direct ‘Star Wars Episode VIII' – which will follow on from ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’.
This will be released on 26th May 2017, marking the 40th anniversary of the franchise.
Meanwhile, there has been no further information released regarding upcoming Star Wars movie ‘The Force Awakens’.
The cast will feature members of the original trilogy reprising their roles including Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill. They will be joined by newcomers including Andy Serkis, John Boyega, Lupita Nyongo’o and Adam Driver.
'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' is set for release on 18th December 2015.
