Jurassic World becomes first movie to make $500million on opening weekend!
It’s a bit of a monster
Jurassic World has become the first movie in history to make more than half a billion dollars on its opening weekend.
The fourth instalment of the dinosaur movie saga raked in a monstrous $511million (£329million) at the global box office.
Impressively, it was the most popular movie in all 66 countries where it was shown, making $204.6m (£131.4m) in the United States and $29.6m (£19m) in the UK.
The previously highest grossing opening weekend was $483.2 million (£311million) for ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2’ back in 2011.
Jeff Bock, a box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations, told Variety.com: "People should call dinosaurs the original superheroes. They are just as big as Iron Man or Superman or Batman right now."
Released 22 years ago, the first pioneering movie Jurassic Park was a gargantuan success at cinemas across the world making $1.029billion.
Its two sequels – 1997’s The Lost World: Jurassic Park and 2001’s Jurassic Park III – fared less well making $618million and $368million respectively leading to a 14 year gap in the franchise.
Directed by Colin Trevorrow, Jurassic World stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard in the lead roles.
