Ewan McGregor wants to star in Trainspotting 2
He's keen to revive Renton
Ewan McGregor says he’s definitely “up for” starring in a sequel to the 1996 movie classic Trainspotting.
Last autumn Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh revealed that Ewan and director Danny Boyle had resolved their bitter rift, which was sparked when Danny cast Leonardo DiCaprio in The Beach instead of Ewan.
After expressing his interest in reprising his role as heroin-addicted protagonist Renton last year, Ewan has now reasserted his desire to be involved.
"It might be the film that brings me back [to Scotland)," Ewan said at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
"I would be up for it, I've said that to Danny. Everybody has talked about it and speculated about it, but I don't if it's happening yet. I've not seen a script and I don't know if there is one. It’s been a long, long time.”
Asked about the fallout with Danny, Ewan added: “I just think I’ve changed my opinion about it. We’ve all moved on and there is a lot of water under the bridge now.
“I miss working with Danny, I did some of my best work with him and he’s one of my favourite directors I’ve worked with. There was some bad blood and ill feeling, but that’s all gone now. I think it might be extraordinary to see a sequel 20 years after the original.”
In April Irvine Welsh said he and Danny Boyle are super keen to make a movie but only if it’s right.
“Myself, Danny and John Hodge,” Irvine explained. “We are all really keen for it to happen, but only in the right circumstances. The circumstance has always been that nobody needs the money, so there’s no point in doing in for that reason.”
Irvine wrote the Trainspotting sequel Porno in 2002, which was set nine years after the events of the first book.
