Beneficiary Spotlight - Reece Glen Lawrie
In March 2017 we supported Reece with £2,000 to pay for extra tuition for Chemistry and Biology
We funded £2,000 for Reece's extra biology and chemistry tuition back in March 2017. At 12 years old Reece was diagnosed with Hypokalemia - a rare condition that causes periodic paralysis. It is a very lonely condition as Reece is one of only three people in the UK currently diagnosed.
Hypokalemia is when a potassium drop renders varied levels of paralysis during sleep. Reece was affected by this for many years until doctors managed to get some level of control of it. Reece missed a lot of school due to his condition but as his dream was to become a marine biologist one day he was determined to do all he could to catch up and get a place at University.
His grandmother Irene, who he lives with, applied to us for funding to enable Reece to have the best chance of getting into University, despite his condition. The grant application was successful and we provided £2,000 to help with Reece's studies.
Reece and his grandmother have kept us up to date on Reece's progress since the funding was granted back in March 2017. Reece particularly noted that the condition is an extremely lonely illness, not only because he is just 1 of 3 in the UK diagnosed, but because the condition stopped him from being a ''normal teenager'. It's terrible to think that due to Reece's condition he wasn't able to live out his teenage years the same as his peers.
Recently, Irene got in touch with us with a further update on Reece. He has passed his exams and has been accepted into Oban University to study Marine Biology. His grandmother Irene wanted to thank Cash for Kids and all of our supporters, for if it hadn't been for the extra tuition provided by Cash for Kids Reece would not have the opportunities he has now.
Thanks to our supporters Reece is now able to reach his lifelong dream of becoming a Marine Biologist. We are so excited to hear this and want to wish Reece all the luck in the world with his upcoming years of study.
As Irene, his grandmother said: "I can't thank Cash for Kids enough, we are so grateful!!! You are all doing a fantastic job in helping kids like Reece. I could not love this boy more!"
Congratulations Reece!
