A "violent and sustained'' attack on a man in Leith is being treated as attempted murder. The 40-year-old is being treated for a number of significant injuries after the assault in Coatfield Lane at around 8.30pm on Saturday.

Police said they are following a positive line of inquiry and believe those involved in the incident were known to each other.

Detective Chief Inspector Martin Maclean said: We are treating this incident as attempted murder and are currently following a positive line of inquiry.

It was a violent and sustained assault and included the use of a weapon. It does appear that those involved were known to one another and consequently I would like to reassure the local community that this has not been a random attack.

There will be an increased police presence in and around Coatfield Lane whilst my team carry out investigations and officers search the area.

The victim has been left with multiple and significant injuries and I would urge anyone who has any information that might help us to please come forward, and contact Police Scotland via 101 or alternatively, through the registered charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.''
