From the 1st April 2017 vehicle excise duty (car tax) is changing. Here is Parkers' guide to the new rules.

What's changing?

Any vehicle emitting between 1-130g/km of CO2 will now be charged in the vehicle's first year of ownership from new. There will be a rate for the first year and then after that it will be £140 for any vehicle emitting more than 1g/km of CO2. Currently this is between £20 to £515 but in the new system the standard £140 rate will apply.

What are the new rates?

What if I buy my car after April 1st but it was built before that? The new rates only apply to vehicles built after April 1st 2017.
