Since setting out to walk 100 laps of his garden and raising nearly £30 million for the NHS, Captain Tom Moore has become a national treasure, even hitting the Number 1 spot with Michael Ball for the single ‘Never Walk Alone’.
The 99-year-old army veteran is due to celebrate his 100th birthday on Thursday 30th April, and since his amazing achievement, he’s been receiving birthday cards from all over the world!
According to the Royal Mail, Captain Tom has received over 25,000 birthday cards so far, with a mail centre in Northampton even having to give him his own sorting box due to demand.
Mail manager Stephen James said in an interview with the BBC, “None of the team have ever known one person receive so much mail. This is a time for heroes, which Captain Tom and all key workers certainly are.”
At the beginning of April, Captain Tom revealed his intentions to raise money for the NHS, setting out to raise £1000 by walking 100 laps of his 25m in length garden.
Not long after his pledge went live, Captain Tom smashed his initially target, with global interest from countries such as USA, Russia and France.
After completing his 100 laps on Thursday 16th April, donations continued to flood in, and at the time of writing he has now raised over £28 million!
In an interview with Good Morning Britain, Captain Tom spoke of the NHS staff saying, "You're all entering something where you are putting yourselves in danger and you're doing that for all the people.
"You are doing a marvellous job!"
What a hero! ❤️
