Formula 1 driver and seven-time world champion Sir Lewis Hamilton has revealed that he is in the process of changing his name.

He said that he wishes to incorporate his mother's maiden name - Larbalestier - into his name, alongside Hamilton.

Hamilton's parents - father Anthony and mother Carmen - had separated when Lewis was only two years old.

Since then, Ms Larbalestier has been present throughout the 37-year-old's career, most notably accompanying Sir Lewis when he received his knighthood at Windsor Castle in December.

Speaking about the decision to change his surname, Sir Lewis said it was a matter of pride that led to the choice to include Larbalestier.

"I am really proud of my family's name. My mum's name is Larbalestier and I am just about to put that in my name.

"I don't really fully understand the whole idea that when people get married the woman loses her name and I really want my mum's name to continue on with the Hamilton name."

Lewis Hamilton will take on Larbalestier, after his mother, Carmen's maiden name.

When asked about when the change would take effect, Hamilton, said he hopes it will be soon.

As Hamilton - who is currently in Bahrain ahead of the Grand Prix on Sunday (March 20th) - prepares for his 16th season in Formula 1, he added that he is hoping to take the top spot after losing to rival Max Verstappen last year.

Speaking at the Dubai Expo 2020, Hamilton said he was also excited to get back on the track: "I am really hoping that when I get on the call this evening - with my team at Brackley and Brixworth - they have found some tricks and ways to extract more from this car.

"There were a lot of cars that looked fast in testing. Alfa Romeo looked fast, Valtteri (Bottas) looked quick, and obviously the Red Bull looked ridiculously fast - but we are the best team."
