Official David Bowie Snowman scarves go on sale
50% of proceeds go to a children's charity
An official scarf based on David Bowie’s iconic garment he wore for the introduction of festive TV classic The Snowman in 1984 has gone on sale.
Based on Raymond Briggs’ best-selling book of the same name, animated Christmas TV institution The Snowman initially premiered on Boxing Day 1982, and featured an intro from Briggs himself.
In 1984, music legend David Bowie, who was a huge fan of Briggs’ apocalyptic book When the Wind Blows (and later recorded the title track for the animation), was drafted in to record a new Snowman introduction.
It features Bowie walking into the attic of his supposed childhood home and discovering a scarf that strongly resembles the one given to the boy towards the end of The Snowman.
On 23rd December 2020, acclaimed director, producer and screenwriter Duncan Jones revealed that he had stumbled across his dad’s iconic scarf in a storage box. He tweeted: “Went looking for sock monkeys in the storage boxes and FOUND THE SCARF!!! YAY!”
In 2022, Duncan Jones paid brilliant homage to the famous introduction by creating his own version that references his late-great dad and featuring him wearing the scarf.
Ahead of the festive season, notjust clothing have announced a Christmas collection featuring The World of The Snowman, created under license from Penguin Ventures (the licensing and consumer products team at Penguin Random House Children’s UK).
Leading the new collection is the most iconic and coveted garment associated with The Snowman. The scarf costing £19.99 is inspired by the same one worn by cultural icon David Bowie in his own attic during the filmed introduction to The Snowman.
For years fans of The Snowman have searched for this garment and last Christmas and now they can own and wear this replica item.
The official collection also includes a festive jumper and blanket that have taken inspiration from Raymond Briggs’ iconic and best-loved picture book.
50% of the proceeds from each sale will be donated to Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice, a charity of which Raymond Briggs was a friend and patron.
Mike Harding, founder of notjust, said: “We’re back with an official range celebrating The Snowman, the country's most adored Christmas animation. Christmas wouldn’t be the same without him and we couldn’t be prouder to team up with The Snowman team to immortalise the late Raymond Briggs’ iconic Christmas character who warms the nation’s hearts every festive season, in a collection of premium and carefully crafted knitwear that gives back to charity with every sale.
You can order the collection here.
