A previously undiscovered painting from a revered British landscape painter has sold for over £300,000 at auction.

The painting, titled "Dedham Vale Looking Towards Langham" was discovered to be that of painter John Constable.

A well-respected figure of British art, Constable - from Suffolk - most painted vast landscapes, often painting "en plein air" pieces.

After the painting was acquired, it was discovered that the painting had not been included in Constable's repertoire.

In the artwork, Constable painted the Dedham Vale on the Suffolk-Essex border, not far from Colchester. The small village of Langham can be seen towards the right of the painting.

Being sold at an auction in North Yorkshire, described the painting as being "useful" for the development of his craft and his eventual reverence in British art.

The initial guide price for the lot was estimated to be anywhere between £150,000 and £200,000.

However, after bidding ended, the painting sold for £320,000 - over double the initial estimation.
