What is International Women's Day?
International Women's Day is an annual celebration of women, which takes place on the 8th of March every year.
After the Socialist Party of America organised a Women's Day on 28th February, 1909 in New York, the 1910 International Socialist Woman's Conference suggested a Women's Day be held annually.
We caught up with Downtown's female presenters ahead of International Women's Day, to see who inspires them each day 👇
Kirstie McMurray
"A woman who inspires me would be Davina McCall! She has had some really difficult times in her life. She kept going and has the most amazing career, and at the same time is so down to earth, kind, humble and so empathetic.
"That for me is the signature of a strong woman. Happy International Women's Day!"
Caroline Fleck
"I was asked to chose an inspirational woman for International Woman's Day, and you know I can't choose because I truly believe every woman and man has the capacity to inspire.
"I looked at the definition of what makes an inspiring woman, and it's simply someone who can fill someone else with the desire or an urge to do something worthwhile. Someone that creates a better world...and that's you."
Hannah Kirkpatrick
"Happy International Women's Day to all the Downtown Radio listeners! A woman who has inspired me today and every day of my life has to be my mum. A strong, independent woman, who has encouraged me in all walks in life. Here's to encouraging and inspiring women today and every day."
