Waterworth strike settles Big Two derby

Andy Waterworth's goal midway through the second half was enough for Linfield to secure a 1-0 victory over Glentoran at The Oval.

Linfield managed the win without David Healy on the touchline after he was hit with a 7 game ban. The IFA handed out the punishment because the Blues boss has been sent off three times this season.

Midway through the first half, Linfield’s Mark Stafford was booked for hacking down Chris Lavery, which summed up a scrappy opening which lacked chances.

With 10 minutes to go before half time, Glentoran carved out the first real opportunity of the game, as 18 year old Linfield debutant keeper Alex Moore had to palm away an angled drive from Lavery.

With the interval approaching, a game suddenly broke out. In the 41st minute, Linfield’s Paul Smyth saw a low shot skid across the turf and clip the outside of the post. But just a minute later, Glentoran should have scored. Lavery released Gordon, whose finish was cleared off the line by Glendinning.

It was then Linfield’s turn to attack but Lowry’s shot sailed wide from the edge of the box, after Morris had saved from Quinn. Linfield then had a decent shout for a penalty turned down, as Quinn’s cross was blocked by the arm of Tiernan McAuley.

3 minutes into the 2nd half Blues defender Jimmy Callacher had a great chance after a corner, but blazed a volley over the bar from 6 yards. The visitors came close again when Waterworth flicked the ball into the path of Smyth, who smashed a low volley inches wide.

The goal was coming, and Linfield took the lead just after the hour mark. Glendinning’s free kick was nodded down by Stewart into the path of Andy Waterworth, who finished well to give the Blues a deserved lead.

Glentoran struggled to create many chances, and while Nacho Novo provided a boost, the Blues' young keeper Moore handled the pressure, summing up a controlled and confident debut.

Linfield have now won as many games at The Oval this season as Glentoran have managed.
