Newry City’s chances of survival in the Danske Bank Premiership suffered a further blow last night as they suffered a 4-1 defeat at home to Coleraine.

The Bannsiders grabbed the lead via Dean Shiels (main pic) before Tiarnan Rushe levelled for City. Newry were reduced to 10 men before the half-time interval allowing Coleraine to add three goals in the second half as Cormac Burke, Eoin Bradley and James McLaughlin hit the target.

Coleraine had a chance at goal in the opening ten minutes as Eoin Bradley was sent through on goal but the striker was denied by the offside flag.

The visitors threatened from a corner in the opening stages but Newry managed to clear, immediately launching a counter attack on 16 minutes. Declan Carville raced up the pitch releasing Tiarnan Rushe but he failed to get a shot away.

Cormac Burke fired wide for the Bannsiders inside the opening 20 minutes before Eoin Bradley made a surging run down the left before firing across goal but his cross evaded the Coleraine attackers.

Coleraine continued to apply the pressure and got their reward on 29 minutes. A long throw in from Steven Douglas found Eoin Bradley inside the area but his initial attempt was blocked before Dean Shiels poked home the rebound from close range. The home side felt that the goal should not have stood as they felt there was a clear handball in the build up.

Newry looked to have pulled level shortly after as Declan Carville’s header from a corner looked destined for the bottom corner but the striker was expertly denied by Chris Johns.

The home side were down to 10 men just before the break as Dale Montgomery was given his marching orders after a challenge on Jamie Glackin.

Coleraine were ahead at the break via Dean Shiels’ strike. It was an uphill battle for Darren Mullen’s men who had to play out the rest of the game with 10 men.

The Bannsiders could have doubled their lead at the start of the second half. Newry goalkeeper flapped at Dean Shiels’ looping effort with the ball falling to Jamie Glackin but the winger forced a great save from Coleman.

Newry capitalised on a defensive error from Coleraine, pulling the scores level on the 50th minute. Tiarnan Rushe was first to react to the blunder picking up the ball outside the penalty area before driving into the box and firing the ball low into the bottom corner.

Rodney McAree’s side appealed for a penalty as Eoin Bradley was chopped down inside the area but referee Steven Gregg denied the appeal.

The equaliser sparked Newry into life as Stephen Hughes’ fired a shot from distance narrowly over the crossbar.

Josh Carson had a golden opportunity to regain the lead for Coleraine before the hour mark. The midfielder latched onto Eoin Bradley’s knock down before sprinting through on goal but his effort was well saved by Andy Coleman.

Moments later Coleraine did go in front as Cormac Burke fired home from Jamie Glackin’s cross.

The Bannsiders wrapped up the three points with ten minutes to go. Eoin Bradley out muscled his man allowing him to race through on goal before dinking the ball over the advancing Coleman and into the back of the net.

James McLaughlin added a fourth for the Bannsiders in the closing stages of the match to round off a positive evening for Rodney McAree’s side.
