Northern Ireland young guns shoot to top of Euros qualifying table
U-21s beat Estonia at Mourneview to record their third win from four
Northern Ireland’s Under-21 side top their European Championship qualifying group today after a 4-2 win over Estonia.
Ian Baraclough’s side had to do it the hard way at Mourneview Park, coming from 2-1 down.
Young Glenavon midfielder Mark Sykes was among the goalscorers and one of stars of the night.
Baraclough paid tribute the Lurgan Blues player and said he could have a big future in the game.
“Sykes especially had a super game,” he said. “If he could work a bit more on his defensive knowledge he is someone who will have a chance at a higher level.”
Baraclough said it was a great win and now leaves Northern Ireland top of the Group Two table on nine points – ahead of Spain who have played two games less.
“To score four goals in an entertaining game I am pleased we came out on top,” he said
“We showed real good character – we went with an attacking team. It means everything you want to keep winning games of football.
“We know second half of the campaign will more difficult but you can only beat what’s in front of you.
