Never-say-die Rory keeps Masters bid still on track
Superb back nine leaves McIlroy in with a shout
Rory McIlroy kept his Grand Slam hopes alive last night in Augusta – after a superb back nine on Day One of the Masters.
The World Number Two got off to a disappointing start.
But he clawed his way back into contention with three birdies to finish level par.
He said he was delighted with his performance.
“After nine holes if someone would have told me I would going to shoot an even part I would have ripped their hand off of for it,” he said
“I thought even par was a good score.”
Meanwhile, the overnight leader is rank outsider American Charlie Hoffman who shot a 7-under opening round.
Despite a swirling wind he carded nine birdies and two bogeys to finish on 65.
