McIlroy 'postive' ahead of Open
World Number Four in determined form as he prepares to tee off
Rory McIlroy says he is determined to put his poor form behind him – and take the Open by storm.
The World Number Four was in positive frame of mind as he prepared to tee off at Royal Birkdale.
“I wish I was here as the number one player in the world and won a couple more Majors and whatever but I haven’t,” he said.
“I am working at it. I am trying to get back there – I am doing everything I can.
“And, hopefully, the start of that crest of a wave starts this week.”
McIlroy missed the cut in three out of his last four tournaments including the Irish Open which he hosted through the Rory Foundation at Portstewart.
He competes against a world-class field at Birkdale including World Number One Dustin Johnson whom he tees off with in the afternoon.
Darren Clarke is Northern Ireland’s only other representative at the Open with Graeme McDowell failing to qualify
