Graeme McDowell has failed to qualify for the Open – for the first time in 14 years.

The Portrush-born golfer has endured a torrid time of late – failing to make the cut in the Irish Open two weeks ago and finishing a disappointing joint 19th in the Scottish Open which ended yesterday.

McDowell carded a final round of level par 72 and was well outside the top 10 finish he needed to secure his place at Royal Birkdale.

He has also slipped out of the top 100 world rankings.
