'I may have to leave QPR' : Paul Smyth says game time vital as he prepares for NI U21s crunch game in Iceland
Striker could go on loan in January transfer window
Paul Smyth has revealed that he could leave Queens Park Rangers in the January transfer window – just to get some game time.
The former Linfield front-man joined the Championship side last summer – scoring on his debut in January this year.
But since ex England boss Steve McClaren took over at Loftus Road, Smyth appears to be frozen out.
In an interview with Downtown & Cool FM, Smyth says the situation simply cannot go on.
“I will just keep my head down until January,” he said.
“If nothing happens at club level then hopefully I will be able to get out and get game time under my belt because I think that is my main priority.
“If I cannot get it at QPR go in January time to get it and hopefully come back a better player.”
Smyth is currently in Iceland with the Northern Ireland Under-21s ahead of their must-win Euro qualifier tomorrow.
Victory in Reykjavik would leave them in a strong position ahead of Tuesday's second Euro game with Slovakia.
Smyth says there's huge potential in the current squad
“It’s massive to be fair – with the quality we have in the 21s – all the boys here are capable of playing in the first time with the quality they have,” he said.
“Hopefully we can finishing the campaign and then push for the first team."
