The Stena Line Belfast Giants have signed defenceman Spiro Goulakos for the 2017/18 season.

The defenceman is in his third season as a professional and joins the Giants after splitting the 2016/17 season between Hartford of the AHL and Greenville of the ECHL. Last season Goulakos posted 15 goals and 21 assists, good for 36 points in 60 games.

A native of Montreal, QC, Goulakos played four years of NCAA hockey with Colgate University and Captained the team in both his Junior and Senior seasons. Spiro was named to the ECAC All-Tournament team in 2014/15 as well as the third All-Star team in 2013/14.

During his collegiate career, he earned 71 points, 22 goals and 49 assists, in 130 games. Goulakos was a teammate of new Giant Darcy Murphy during three seasons with Colgate.

Goulakos represented Greenville in the 2017 ECHL All-Star game and was the second highest goal scoring defenceman in his team during both the 2015/16 season with Elmira and with Greenville during the 2016/17 season.

Head Coach Adam Keefe on the signing of Spiro Goulakos:

“We were really excited to lock up Spiro Goulakos for the 2017/18 season. Spiro is a highly offensive defenceman that has a great shot. He plays with an edge and I know the Belfast fans are going to like watching Spiro in action.”

Spiro Goulakos on joining the Giants:

“I like to think I am pretty well rounded and play with an edge. I like to contribute on the powerplay although I like to take pride in my all-around game.”

“Myself and Darcy Murphy have been talking about how great it would be to win a championship together in Belfast. Whatever role Coach Keefe thinks will benefit the team - I am willing to step into whatever that will be.
