Belfast United have just missed out on a famous victory in their tough Champions League preliminary round opener in Germany.

The Northern Ireland domestic champions were up against Greece’s much more experienced top side Doukas.

Ciaran Donaghy’s side gave an excellent account of themselves in what was a nip-and-tuck affair throughout.

But they were eventually narrowly edged out 7-5.

Next up are hosts Hohenstein-Ernstthal.

Donaghy said the spirts were high in the Belfast camp after a superb opening performance.

But he said the road ahead would be tougher.

Speaking to Downtown & Cool FM after the game, he said: “We have done really well in the first game – a lot more competitive than we were last year.

“I watched a bit of the Germany and Albania champions’ game afterwards.

“It looks like these two games will be a lot tougher than this one but the mood in the camp is very positive and we’re looking forward to the challenge.”
