Football show: Warren Feeney on McAuley's retirement & Rory Patterson reflects on his career

This week on our Bet McLean Football Show, we feature former Northern Ireland strikers Warren Feeney and Rory Patterson.

Feeney, who was capped 46 times, spoke to us about the retirement of his close friend and former international roommate Gareth McAuely.

"A lot of people underestimated how good he was. Over a few yards he was very quick, read the game well, but he's very humble and has had an unbelievable career. It would be very, very said if he big man didn't stay on in football, because people certainly need him about the place.

"I remember him at Linfield and it didn't work out so he moved on. I went to Stockport, and Sammy McIlroy took him over on trial. It just shows you the attitude he had and the way he was, he didn't let setbacks get to him. Keith Alexander Lincoln Manager took a chance on him and his career just went on and on," said Feeney.

Also appearing this week is well-traveled forward Rory Patterson, who's backing one of his former clubs to secure the Irish League title this season.

"The top signing for Linfield - and I can't actually believe they got him - is Bastien Hery. I played against him when I was at Derry and he's a proper player. With him setting up the likes of Shayne Lavery, I just can't see past Linfield," said Patterson.

Patterson has also opened up about his reputation as a controversial character within the game.

"Me as a football and me outside of football are two completely different people, and I don't think people can separate the two. Not a lot of people really know me. I do have a small circle and I'm happy with that. Once I'm on the pitch, I know I'm a different person and I think people just marry the two and it's hard to shake it," said Patterson.
