"The Beast" as he was known to Premier League fans, has been signed with regular keeper Sean O'Neill needing shoulder surgery.
The 41-year-old brings a wealth of experience to the team, with spells at West Brom and Burnley during his career.
The 6 ft 5 shot stopper said it was an easy decision to come to Belfast, having come to the end of his contract at Mansfield.
"At the end of the day, I din't want to hang my boots up," he said.
"That was what I had to do if I was to continue at Mansfield, so this gives me another year in football.
"My age as well, is always going to be against me, but I still feel there's life in me.
"I didn't miss a training session last year, I was training hard and I didn't fall behind."
The keeper says coming to Northern Ireland has given him an opportunity that he thought had passed him by, late on in his career.
"It's always been a dream to play in the Europa League," he said.
"I thought I was too old for that, that it was a dream that just flew away.
"But I've been given the opportunity to do it and it's another tick in the 'dream box' if you can call it that.
"I'm really looking forward to it."
