Commonwealth Games: McClenaghan ready to defend title as NI trio ban overturned
The Gymnastics trio of Rhys McClenaghan, Ewan McAteer and Eamon Montgomery will now be able to compete for Northern Ireland in this Summer's Commonwealth Games.
They had initially banned from the competition by the International Gymnastic Federation, due to participating for Ireland in previous events outside of the Games.
However, that ban has now been overturned and all three will now now be able to take their place in Birmingham for the 2022 Games, with McClenaghan able to defend the title he won in 2018.
Sport NI Chief Executive Antoinette McKeown said: “This issue has highlighted the need for a clear international consensus when it comes to Northern Irish athletes, and we will be engaging in wider conversations to pursue this aim.
“We hope Rhys, Eamon and Ewan can now focus without distraction on what they do best. Let me take this opportunity to wish them well for the Commonwealth Games and we look forward to watching them competing on the world stage where they belong.”
Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey added: “I spoke to Eamon Montgomery, Ewan McAteer and Rhys McClenaghan following the original decision by FIG and they were devastated by the move.
“I am delighted these three talented local athletes can now continue their focused preparations to compete at this year’s Commonwealth Games next month in Birmingham."
Minister Hargey added she would continue to support the unique position of local athletes across all sporting codes.
“The Federation’s decision rightly recognises the unique position that is conferred upon our citizens under the Good Friday Agreement.
“This needs to be respected across all codes and in all international competitions.
“I am fully committed to continuing to support all our athletes and to ensure their right to participate in sport is protected.
“I hope that today’s announcement sends a strong message of encouragement to our athletes and will inspire more young people to get engaged in sport, particularly on the international stage.”
