Glentoran beat Cliftonville for the first time in 8 attempts in a clinical 2-0 win over the Reds at Solitude in the Danske Bank Premiership.

The visitors made an impressive start, with David McDaid going close twice in the opening two minutes, first with a snapshot inside the box and then a header. However, the striker started the move that led to the 4th minute opener.

His smart ball down the left wing found the overlapping run of Marcus Kane who was able to beat onrushing keeper Richard Brush and square the ball for Cameron Stewart to sneak in at the near post and nudge it over the line from close range.

In the 37th minute, Glens mdifielder Chris Gallagher put a half volley a yard wide of the bottom corner from 25 yards, before Cliftonville's Gorman had an effort cleared away after a goalmouth scramble at the other end.

Glentoran then moved 2 goals clear early in the second half through Gallagher after Gavin Peers' 52nd minute free kick was launched deep into the Cliftonville half.

It was only cleared as far as Kane, whose header found Gallagher on the edge of the box; the midfielder shifted it onto his left foot and found the bottom corner from 18 yards.

Ronan Doherty crashed a 25-yard volley just over the bar as Cliftonville tried to find an immediate response, but they didn't really spark into life until Glentoran's Hrvoje Plum was sent off for a second yellow in the 80th minute.

Conor McMenamin cracked the crossbar for the Reds in the 82nd minute, and Ruaidhri Donnelly had a goal ruled out for handball with 5 minutes left to play.

Connor Pepper should have tapped Glentoran into a 3-0 leading the 90th minute, but his miss didn't prove costly as his side held on for the points.
