Another record on the horizon for Rea
Co Antrim four-time World Superbikes champ sets sight on top wins tally
Jonathan Rea will re-write the superbike history books – yet again – later with victory in Doha.
The County Antrim record-breaker added another huge accolade to the unprecedented collection yesterday in Qatar when he took his race wins tally in the World Superbike season to 17.
That feat equalled the record set by Doug Polen in 1991.
But Rea (31) from Ballynure, near Ballyclare, will hold the record on his own if he succeeds in today’s final race.
Even a fourth place will see the four-time world champion exceed his previous World Superbike points record of 556.
In yesterday’s opener Rea finished Race One ahead of Kawasaki team-mate Tom Sykes while Alex Lowes took third.
Rea told Eurosport: “I had my eye on this 17-win thing because everyone was talking about it," Rea told Eurosport.
"I can't quite believe it. I'm very fortunate to be in this position where the team give me such a good bike."
