Yellow weather warning issued for Northern Ireland this week

Snow is on the way ❄️

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice to hit Northern Ireland this week.

The warning comes into affect from midnight on Friday 7th Jan to 10am. It looks like frequent sleet and snow showers may lead to some difficult driving conditions and disruption to travel on Friday morning.

Wintry showers arriving from the west overnight Thursday into Friday are likely to lead to a fresh covering of snow for areas. Most of the west of Northern Ireland will be affected, from Coleraine to Newry.

Possibly as much as 10 cm could fall on Friday morning, so it's important to take care when travelling.

What to expect

  • Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
  • Some brief power outages are possible with a risk of isolated lightning strikes

NI weekly weather forecast

Today: A cold windy day with northwesterly gales around coasts. There will be occasional showers especially over northern areas, occasionally wintry with snow settling on the hills. Some sunny intervals too. Maximum temperature 5 °C

Tonight: Wintry showers continuing but becoming more isolated through the night, winds will gradually ease too and a frost developing under the clear spells inland. Minimum temperature 1 °C

Wednesday: A cold start on Wednesday, mainly dry for all areas with a lot of bright or sunny weather. An early frost is likely in evening but clouding over later. Maximum temperature 5 °C****

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday: Wet and windy on Thursday, then wintry showers later. Friday will bring settling snow, then rain at first on Saturday, drier later
