Heavy rain and thunder set to continue this week across Northern Ireland
Stormy weather is on the way 🌧
Last updated 15th Aug 2022
A number of yellow thunderstorm warnings have been issued across the UK, including Northern Ireland, as the August mini-heatwave comes to an end.
The Met Office have warned of potential frequent lightning, large hail and flash flooding impacts from the intense rainfall.
The yellow weather warning for thunderstorms is in place until midnight tonight.
Dan Suri, Met Office’s chief forecaster, said: "With no meaningful rainfall in some southern locations since June, soils in these areas have become baked by the sun turning them into hard almost impenetrable surfaces.
"Any rainfall in these areas won’t be able to soak away and instead it will wash off soils and other hard surfaces, creating flash flooding in some areas. This excess water can rapidly inundate some flood-prone areas."
What to expect:
Areas of heavy rain and thunderstorms will continue during Monday, bringing possible disruption...
- There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
- Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
- Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
- There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
