After a fortnight of sunshine and blue skies, unsettled weather is on the way for most in Northern Ireland.

High pressure currently remains in charge of the UK’s weather, bringing plenty of sunshine and above average temperatures for the time of year.

Largely dry and fine conditions will continue for the vast majority on Friday, with plenty of sunshine and highs of around 21°C.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Mark Sidaway explained: “The high pressure that has been responsible for our recent high temperatures gradually shifts away over the weekend, as more of an unsettled regime begins to take charge and introduces more frequent rain and cloud, as well as a drop in temperatures.

“Those in the far northwest will see the first of the rain late on Friday and into Saturday, and while Saturday will start dry for much of the UK, we are likely to see areas of showers moving in from the south later in the day, although this aspect is still quite uncertain. However, by Sunday fresher conditions with showers are expected to move in from the west.”

Low pressure is likely to lie west of the UK into next week with showers and some longer spells of rain likely, but also some drier and sunnier intervals, with temperatures around average for the time of year.

Northern Ireland's five-day forecast 👇

Today: A fine dry and sunny day; A chilly start then feeling much warmer over County Down and country Antrim than of late. Light westerly winds. Maximum temperature 20 °C.

Tonight: A dry evening and night with largely clear skies. Some patchy fog is likely towards the end of the night. Less cold than last night. Minimum temperature 2 °C.

Friday: A dry bright day with plenty of sunny spells. Some patchy high cloud in the afternoon. Warm again. Maximum temperature 21 °C.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday: Mostly dry Saturday, some brightness to start, but increasingly cloudy with some patchy rain in the west later. Colder, cloudy, with showers Sunday and Monday, wintery on the hills.

UK long range weather forecast 👇

Monday 14th - Wednesday 23rd April

A much more changeable period through at least the early part of next week as low pressure lies to the west of the UK bringing a mixture of showers and some longer spells of rain, but also some drier, sunnier interludes.

There is a low risk of heavier, possibly thundery showers coming into the country from the south for a time early in the period, but confidence in this aspect of the forecast is low and these may well pass to the east. This heralds a wetter period through the middle of April with showers or longer spells of rain at times, which could be heavy and thundery in places.

Strong winds could develop in some areas, particularly the south and west. Temperatures are likely to return closer to normal.
