So instead of a duvet day with the kids this weekend, why not lace up and get outdoors, you won't be disappointed.

You don’t have to spend lots of money on a family-fun day out, a simple walk in the sunshine, or even the rain, can be a great activity that all ages can enjoy.

The Gruffalo Trail, Colin Glen Forest, Belfast

Here you can find iconic characters from the children's picture book The Gruffalo, nestled within the enchanting Colin Glen Forest Park. Meet the silly old fox, owl and snake, as well as an 8-foot-tall Gruffalo. If you've got older kids, they might prefer a trip down the alpine coaster or zip-line.

Tollymore Forest Park, Bryansford

Hidden caves and grottos, ancient bridges and stoney steps – Tollymore is truly a feast for the eyes.


Whatever the weather, you'll fall in love with nature as you roam through this forest at the foothills of the Mournes.

Stormont Estate, Belfast

Just five miles out of the city, Stormont Estate's Woodland Walk and Fitness Trail is a great place to escape and relax.



The Mo Mowlam Play Park at Stormont Estate in Belfast is an all-inclusive play park, specially designed so children of all abilities can play together and has over 40 separate pieces of equipment.

Hillsborough Forest, Hillsborough

Set in the picturesque village of Hillsborough, the Forest covers almost 200 acres, with marked routes providing a variety of different walks to suit everyone.



Picnic benches, picture-perfect spots with additional seating and a state-of-the-art outdoor children's play area are all available here.

Delamont Country Park, Killyleagh

Featuring one of NI's best play parks, as well as bespoke children's train ride and mini-station, there's so much for kids of all ages to enjoy at Delamont. With a popular caravan park on site, this a staycation must-see.

Glenarriff Forest Park, Antrim

There's no way little ones will get bored racing through the winding treetop walkway through Glenarriff Forest Park.



If you've got animal lovers in the family, they won't be disappointed. Glenariff Forest is home to many animals of conservation concern, such as the red squirrel, hen harrier and Irish hare.

Slieve Meelmore, Mourne Mountains

A popular hiking destination, Slieve Meelmore is the perfect Mourne Mountain to to tackle for beginners. Standing at a height of 680 m (2230 ft) it's the 7th highest mountain in Northern Ireland.


The summit begins at Meelmore Lodge at the start of the Trassey Track, then follow the Mourne Wall which leads you to the top.

Giant’s Causeway Green Trail, Bushmills

This is buggy-friendly, so even the tiniest of family members can join in on the fun. It's a moderate walk, approx. two miles long, with the most spectacular coastal views. On a bright summer's day you can even spot the shores of Scotland across the sea.

Montalto Estate, Ballynahinch

Why not check out the all-new History Trail at Montalto Estate, it's your chance to soak in nature and learn as you go, exploring the location of the Battle of Ballynahinch. Keep a look out to see if you can spot soldiers perched amongst the trees.

Slieve Gullion Forest Park, Newry

Set in the beautiful grounds of Slieve Gullion Forest Park, The Giant's Lair and Fairy Trail is an innovative magical living storybook. Journey through the mischievous fairy village, complete with over-head bridges and colourful doorways. The Lair is free to explore – with lots of nooks and crannies to investigate, it's advised a backpack carrier or baby sling is used for little ones.

Finnebrogue Woods, Downpatrick

Located on one of NI's most beautiful spots, Fodder at Finnebrogue Woods offers the ultimate woodland experience. Nature trails through the trees and along the lake shore are approx. 20 mins in length, so why not stop off at their fantastic café and farm shop to sample their local produce and yummy snacks.
