Brand new rail station opens in north Belfast

Previously named York Gate Station, the newly renovated York Street Train Station represents a major capital investment by the Department for Infrastructure at the heart of north Belfast and will connect to existing cycle and active travel infrastructure.   

Services began on Sunday (29th April), and the new £17m station is now fully operational.

It is an access point for those travelling to the Ulster University campus, Cathedral Quarter, and Sailortown.

Offering a modern, accessible passenger facility, York Street Train Station is fully accessible and has a cafe, toilets, passenger waiting areas and a changing places facility, as well as cycle parking facilities. 

It also features a major new piece of public art created by local artist Kevin Killen, centred on the theme ‘Journeylines’, giving expression to the possibilities and options opened up by public transport.

Route Manager Mark Montgomery says it is 'good news' for the Belfast area - which will also see the opening of a new transport hub in the city centre later this year.

Infrastructure Minister John O'Dowd said things are going in the right direction, during this morning's opening ceremony: "It will drive economic development in this area, it will assist in our challenge to get more people out of their car and into public transport. I have no doubt it'll be a regeneration post for this entire community."
