A second candlelit vigil is to be held in Londonderry to show solidary with the Ukrainian people as the war with Russia continues.

It is due to take place at Derry’s Guildhall Square between 7.00pm and 8.00pm.

The event is the second of its kind to take place this month in the city.

The gatherings have been organised by a group of local women who wanted to show their support for the people suffering in Ukraine.

According to a spokesperson around 200 people turned out at the previous event and it is hoped the same number will turn out tonight.

A spokesperson said: “The first one (vigil) was organised by a friend of mine, she was really struck by what was happening in Ukraine and the other conflicts around the world.

“And we just thought, you know, get the word out there and get people to unite in prayer for the war to stop for peace to be restored.

“It is heart-breaking watching families being torn apart.

“People are being killed.

“And I just thought, right, okay, she's willing to do another one.

“Everybody was saying how beautiful (the last vigil) was and it was nice to see people come out and pray together.”
