A yellow weather warning for ice and snow across Northern Ireland has now been extended until midday Thursday.

The MET office says to expect “further disruption” as wintry showers continue.

We’re told to expect some roads and railways to be affected, with longer journey times by road, bus, and train services

Pedestrians are also being warned to be cautious of getting injured from slips and falls on icy surfaces, and to watch out for icy patches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths

A statement said, “Showers will affect the warning area, these falling as a mix of rain and hail near coasts, and sleet and snow inland at times, mainly overnight.”

Several schools across the province have closed for a second day as the weather continues to cause disruption

“This will lead to some temporary snow accumulations at low levels, whilst higher ground of Northern Ireland and Wales in particular, could see a further 2-5 cm of snow. For most parts of the warning area, however, ice will be the main hazard.”

Drivers are also being urged to take extra care. The warning comes after police in Derry City and Strabane dealt with almost 20 collisions between 5pm on Monday and Tuesday morning.

Speaking to Downtown/Cool FM, PSNI Inspector Tim McCullough from the Strand Road local policing team said, “We’re putting an appeal out to motorists at the moment to slow down, make some space, and leave plenty of space to the car in front.”

“If you’ve a journey to do, set out in good time so you’re not rushed.”

“Pay particular attention coming up to the likes of junction. Take lots of time to slow down under control.”
