The Stena Line Belfast Giants lost out to a overtime winner in Saturday night's home Elite League clash against the Cardiff Devils. Patrick Asselin scored the winner at 62:37 after Referee Schmejkal awarded the Devils a Powerplay in overtime.

The Giants dominated the opening 20 minutes and struck twice inside 67 seconds to give the home side a 2-0 lead. Steve Saviano opened the scoring at 12:43 with his low shot on the powerplay finding its way into the net, assisted by Chris Higgins and Michael Forney.

Forney then turned from provider into scorer as he finished well at 13:50, assisted by Chris Higgins and Mark Garside. The Devils pulled a goal back at 14:57 through Bentivoglio's stunning slapshot to leave the score at 2-1 going into the second period.

The middle period was a deadlock with the Giants impressing on the penalty kill, defending two Devils powerplays to hold onto their lead for the final period.

The Cardiff Devils piled on the pressure in the third period in search of an equaliser and they got themselves back onto level terms through Andrew Hotham at 47:17. At 49:48, Jackson Whistle was forced to leave the ice through injury and was replaced by Stephen Murphy in the Giants net.

Into overtime and it was the visitors who claimed the additional point and the win through Asselin's sudden-death game winning goal 2:37 into the period while on the powerplay.

The Giants are back in action on Saturday 8th October at home against the Braehead Clan, face-off 7pm, before travelling to Sheffield the following day to take on the Steelers at 5pm.
