The Stena Line Belfast Giants won Sunday's road game in Braehead in a shootout thanks to Jackson Whistle stopping two Clan shooters and James Desmarais and David Rutherford both scoring.

The win, which was Whistle's first start in net for the team, keeps the Giants in first place in Challenge Cup Group A with 9 points from 6 games played.

Blair Riley, assisted by Jim Vandermeer, ensured the Giants took a lead going into the second period with a nice finish at 14:45.

The second period saw the Braehead Clan draw level as Leavitt struck again at 28:06 to leave the scored tied up at 2-2 going into the final 20 minutes.

The final period was a stalemate despite the Giants dominating throughout and outshooting the Clan 11-2. Both sides could also not find a winner during overtime with this game seemingly destined for a shootout.

James Desmarais scored with the first shot before Jackson Whistle denied Matt Beca. David Rutherford made it two-out-of-two for the Giants, leaving Daniel Ahsberg needing to score in order to keep the Clan alive. However, Jackson Whistle again stopped the Braehead shooter and the Giants claimed a third consecutive road win with a 3-2 win in Glasgow.

The Giants return to action on Saturday with their first Elite League home game of the season, against the Cardiff Devils at The SSE Arena, Belfast. Face-Off is 7pm and tickets are now on sale online at Ticketmaster and from the Arena Box Office in person or by calling (028) 9073 9074.
