A vigil to show solidarity with those affected by the Turkish and Syrian earthquakes is set to take place in Londonderry this evening (Tuesday).

Derry Anti War Coalition has invited the people of the city to gather at six o’clock at Derry's Guildhall.

At least 5,200 people have died after yesterday's devastating earthquakes which shook Turkey and Syria.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said fatalities could reach as high as 20,000 in the coming days.

On the groups Facebook page it said: “Much of Northern Syria has already been decimated by war, the suffering of these people is unimaginable.

“The Syrian families living in Derry mostly come from the North of the Country.

“They are desperately watching the television coverage and trying to get news of loved ones.

“There is a sizable Turkish and Kurdish community in Derry. Many of them have family and friends caught up in this awful tragedy.

“We need to let them know that they are not alone.

“That Derry is a place that will stand with them.

“Please come out to show your support for our Turkish, Kurdish and Syrian neighbours”.

Many politicians and representatives have offered their condolences since the tragedy struck.

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood posted on Twitter:

“The footage coming from Turkey and Syria of the earthquake aftermath is horrifying.

“This requires an urgent response from the international community to help those trapped and whose lives are ruined.”
