Sixth man arrested in Omagh attempted murder probe

A 71-year-old man has been arrested by detectives investigating the attempted murder of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell.

He is the sixth man to be held under the Terrorism Act by the Police Service of Northern Ireland over the shooting of the off-duty officer in Omagh, Co Tyrone.

Mr Caldwell, 48, remains in a critical condition.

Police say they believe the shooting is terror related and have linked the attack to the dissident republican group the New IRA.

Detectives investigating the attempted murder of off-duty Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell in Omagh have been given more time to question four of five men arrested in connection with the shooting.

They now have until 10pm on Tuesday to question the suspects, aged 22, 38, 45 and 47.
