One of Northern Ireland’s top tourist attractions has had to close after being targeted by vandals.

The Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, frequently named in ‘must-see’ tourism guides, is to be shut down “for the foreseeable future”.

It is understood vandals tried to cut the bridge.

Suspended nearly 100ft above sea level, Carrick-a-Rede connects two cliffs beside Ballintoy.

The National Trust NI, which runs the attraction, took to Twitter to say its structural engineers were assessing the level of damage.

And it said the “safety of visitors and staff is of utmost importance.”
