They say a dog is a man's best friend, and that is certainly true of pet lovers here!

Whilst the vast majority of these dogs are much-loved members of families, it is a sobering fact that hundreds of dogs find themselves in dog pounds and rescue centres each year.

Staff at animal shelters are calling on local dog lovers to consider opening their homes and hearts to a rescue hound.

If you’re thinking of adding a new pet to your family, consider the animals desperately in need at your local animal shelter first - some have been waiting years for a new home.

Do you have what it takes to give these dogs everything they could possibly desire?

Meet our pets of the week from Almost Home Animal Rescue - based in Moira they rescue, rehabilitate & re-home pets.

Penny

Penny is in need of a special home - she wasn't well looked after before and has suffered both physical and neurological consequences. She is not in pain but with age this may deteriorate.

Tori

Tori arrived at Almost Home NI in a lot of pain, but with a lot of love and care from the team she's back on the mend. Tori needs a quiet settled home, with a garden and another dog preferably.

Abu

Abu is fantastic two-year old greyhound, like most greys he has the gentle calm nature. Abu would prefer a home with another large breed dog if possible.

Gerry

Gerry has had a hard life, not that you can tell from that cheeky smile. But he's after a home that is filled with fun and food.

Mia

Mia is a shy and quiet lady, who would love to adopted into a home with another dog for companionship.

Sasha

Sasha is a lively 2/3 year old who is filled with energy and loves to play. She's looking for a family that can help tire her out every day, and that has plenty of green space.

Holly

Holly falls in love with everyone she meets, she will always have a smile on her face no matter the time of day. She might be a little older, 9 years old, but she's full of fun.

Brynn

Brynn is such a sweet lad, he loves nothing more than sunbathing and belly rubs! He's a mix-breed, around 2/3 years old and is looking for an active owner who loves long walks and has plenty of chicken in the fridge.

Mark

Mark was very unwell when he first arrived, but the team have worked tirelessly to nurse him back to good health. He is the sweetest boy, great natured and very affectionate.

Lacey

Lacey is 3ish and is such a charmer. When she first arrived at Almost Home NI she gave birth to 3 beautiful pups. Her pups have all been adopted, so it's Lacey's time to shine. Lacey would like a home where she could be the only pet!

Max

Max is such a sweetheart! He's great with other dogs, loves the outdoors and is obsessed with chasing balls in the sun.

How can you adopt a dog if you live in Northern Ireland?

The first thing to do is to visit your local shelter. They are dotted around Northern Ireland and a simple Google search of your area will help you find your closest one.

Once you've visited a shelter and found a dog, you can speak a member of staff about the adoption process.

Remember adopting a pet is a long-term commitment as most dogs live to between 10 and 15 years. They will need attention, routine veterinary treatments, training, grooming and daily care.
