NISRA’S Covid-19 death toll in NI now 2,186

The number of Coronavirus related deaths in Northern Ireland has now reached 2,186.

According to the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) another 156 deaths involving Covid-19 occurred in the week from January 9 to 15.

This is the highest weekly number since the pandemic began.

Two days, January 7 and 11, saw the joint highest number of Covid-19 related deaths occurring in any one day since the start of the pandemic (28).

Of this total 1,367 (62.5%) took place in hospital, 656 (30.0%) in care homes, 13 (0.6%) in hospices and 150 (6.9%) at residential addresses or other locations.

The 669 deaths which occurred in care homes and hospices involved 163 separate establishments.

While the departmental death toll is now 1,692 the statistics agency reports its Covid-19 data with a week lag.

The NISRA figures are based on the information entered on death certificates, completed by medical professionals.

They may or may not have previously tested positive for the virus.

However, the Department of Health’s figures are based on patients having previously tested positive for the virus.

The number of Coronavirus related deaths recorded by the DOH is currently 494 less than NISRA’s.

Yesterday (Thursday) the daily dashboard showed a further 21 people died after contracting the virus.

The data showed 723 people tested positive from 2,958 individual tests.

While, 806 hospital inpatients currently have the virus, and there are 33 available ICU beds at present.
