Polling stations are open today (Thursday) across Northern Ireland for the European Parliament elections.

Votes are being cast for three MEPs from a total of 11 candidates.

The rest of the UK is balloted via proportional representation, but locally the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system is employed.

Cahir Hughes from the Electoral Commission has this advice for voters.

“When you get down there, do remember to bring a correct form of photographic ID such as your drving licence, your passport and electoral identity card.

“Once you get your ballot paper it’s a n STV election so you vote using numbers – 1 for your first preference 2, for your second preference and so on.

“You can vote for as few or as many candidates as you like.”

And the polls close tonight at 10.
