The Stena Line Belfast Giants are excited to announce the signing of Michael Quesnele for the 2016/17 Elite League season. Quesnele, a 27 year old Defenceman, is from Ontario in Canada, holds Italian Citizenship and takes the Giants final EU spot on the lineup.

The Canadian will be familiar to Giants fans after spending the 2015/16 season with the Coventry Blaze, where Quesnele posted 9 goals and 16 assists, good for 25 points in 60 games played. Mike, who claimed the Blaze’s Annual Contribution to the Community Award, helped the team to a place in the 2016 Playoff Grand Final, before losing out to the Nottingham Panthers.

Prior to Quesnele’s time with Coventry, the 5’11” with a left shot, spent five seasons with Lakehead University. During his time with Lakehead, Quesnele wore the ‘A’, earned two All-Star Awards and posted 27 goals and 68 assists, good for 95 points in 137 games played.

Quesnele will arrive in Northern Ireland on Tuesday and will make his Giants debut on Saturday against the Fife Flyers at The SSE Arena, Belfast, face-off 7pm before facing his former team, the Coventry Blaze, on Sunday at The SkyDome.

Steve Thornton, Head of Hockey Operations, on the signing of Quesnele:

“Derrick (Walser) and I felt that Mike was a top pairing defenceman in Coventry last year. He skates well, competes hard and has offensive upside. We feel that he is a proven commodity in this league and we expect him to slot in nicely on our blueline.”
