Rory McIlroy believes he's hit form at the right time, and will begin the Irish Open in with a good chance of retaining his title in Portstewart.

It's a feat that hasn't been achieved since Nick Faldo won 3 consecutive titles in the early 90s, but McIlroy remains confident.

"I'm very proud to be sitting here as defending champion. The Irish Open was a title I wanted to win since I was a young boy. It would be great to have a chance to defend it this year, and I feel like I'm playing well enough to have a chance," said McIlroy.

As both the defending champion and the tournament host, McIlroy is now accustomed to having to deal with both sides of preparation.

"It's fantastic for the Rory Foundation that we're able to raise the profile of this event, and at the same time, be able to help all these worthy causes. We helped raise over a million Euros last year, so I'm hoping we can do the same this year."

"The Irish Open has become one of the biggest weeks in the year, not just for me but for the Foundation. Obviously I'm able donate my prize money to the foundation, too. And with a $7m prize fund it'll be substantial - if I can play any way decent."

The Open is also expecting to provide a significant economic boost for the North coast, as thousands of fans attend the 4-day tournament in Portstewart.
