Four people have been confirmed dead in a terror incident outside the House of Parliament.

A police officer was stabbed and a man believed to be the attacker was shot at the Houses of Parliament.

A car was also driven at high speed across Westminster Bridge - hitting victims as it went.

A woman was later pulled alive from the Thames after jumping off.

Met Police commander BJ Harrington said police have stepped up security across the city.

"There is an ongoing investigation being led by the counter Terrorism command and we would ask anybody who has images or film of the incident to pass those to the police.

"I'd like to repeat our request for the public to avoid the following areas: Parliament Square, Whitehall, Westminster Bridge, Lambeth Bridge, Victoria Street up to the junction of Broadway and the Victoria embankment up to Embankment tube station.

"Public safety is our top priority and we are reviewing our policing stance across London, there will be additional officers on duty and deployed across the capital." He said.

Prime Minister Theresa May was in the House of Commons when Parliament was suspended.

She was evacuated by her security team immediately.
