Finally, after 40 years in the industry, including eight Oscar nominations, Sir Kenneth Branagh has picked up a coveted golden statuette from the Academy.

Branagh took home Best Original Screenplay for his latest film Belfast, that was based on his own experiences growing up in during The Troubles.

Fortunately, Branagh was able to attend the event in Los Angeles after missing out on a number of previous red-carpets due to testing positive for Covid-19.

The filmmaker delivered a heartfelt speech after his first Oscar win.

“This is an enormous honour for my family and a great tribute to an amazing city and fantastic people. This is the search for joy and hope in the face of violence and loss.:”

He paid tribute to those who couldn’t be there to celebrate the film’s success.

“We lost some people along the way: Johnny Sessions, Jim Dornan (Jamie’s Father), Leah Newman. We miss them, we love them, we will never forget them. And we will never forget all of those lost in the heart-breaking, heart-warming, human story of that amazing city of Belfast on the fabulous island of Ireland.”

Family drama Coda, which features a predominantly deaf cast, was named best picture.

One of the most talked about moments from the glittering ceremony involved one of the most iconic names in Hollywood – Will Smith.

Just 20 minutes before he himself won Best Actor for King Richard, Will stormed the stage after Chris Rock made a joke about wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

It was a tense moment, that US broadcasters opted to mute, however some global channels kept the sound on.
