The house on Farringdon Gardens in Ardoyne was seriously damaged in the incident.

Firefighters who respsonded to the scene have been praised for their bravery as at one stage they were blown off their feet when the gas ignited.

A number of nearby residents had to be evacuated, but were later allowed to return to their homes.

SDLP Councillor Paul McCusker was at the scene last night:

"The quick action of a neighbour and the immediate response and bravery from the Fire Service ensured there was no one seriously injured or killed tonight in Ardoyne."

"We witnessed a number of fire fighters being blown down the path, but they continued to help keep everyone safe.

"They are real heroes and thankfully they were not injured."

He added: "My thoughts are with the couple whose home was seriously damaged, their next door neighbours and all the residents affected.

"Many families were caught up in this incident tonight and thanks also to the staff at Ardoyne Community Centre for their assistance with those who were evacuated.

"Lots of neighbours rallied together to support each other and this showed a real sense of community with everyone looking out for each other.

"It was an horrific explosion but thankfully there were no serious injuries or loss of life
