Gaels express frustration at Casement Legal Challenge
In an open letter, Gaels throughout Belfast and Antrim’s GAA Clubs have highlighted their overwhelming support for the redevelopment of Casement Park that they say will bring transformative sporting as well as cultural and socio-economic benefits to the County and the whole of Ulster.
The letter signed by all GAA Clubs in Antrim and led by the Gaels for Casement Group expressing frustration and disappointment at the recent legal challenge given the extensive planning consultation process that was undertaken has called on the current judicial process to be taken forward as expeditiously as possible.
Planning permission for the redevelopment of Casement Park was granted in July this year after a prolonged planning process of nearly five years with the initial application submitted in early 2017.
The Group highlighted the importance of the project for Antrim Gaels of all ages and all codes with the stadium set to be a catalyst for the growth and development of games in the country.
The letter also acknowledged the right of those that wish to challenge the legal process and recognised the need for due process.
Commenting, Brian White, Gaels for Casement and former Antrim Senior Football Manager said: “The granting of planning permission in July was momentous not only for Gaels in Antrim but throughout the whole of Ulster and we are deeply disappointed that a legal challenge has been brought against the decision.
“Whilst we respect the right of those who are opposed to the project to challenge it, we are calling for no further delays to the project and urge those overseeing these proceedings to take forward due process as expeditiously as possible.”
Jane Adams, former Senior Antrim Camogie played added: “For too long our footballers, camogs, hurlers, and handball players have been deprived of a ground to call their home in Antrim. We look forward to the commitments given to the delivery of Ulster’s provincial stadium and Antrim’s home at Casement Park.”
