Three people have narrowly escaped injury after their smoke alarm failed to go off when their house caught fire in County Londonderry.

The fire broke out at their home in Long Commons area of Coleraine early this morning.

It is understood that all are suffering the effects of smoke inhalation.

John Bacon, Coleraine District Commander for the NIFRS said: "A man woman and their grandchild were inside the house when the blaze started.

"Neighbours on the other side of the street had raised the alarm with the people inside the house, because the smoke alarms were not working within the premises."

He said if the internal doors hadn't been closed it may have been a different outcome.

The Northern Ireland Fire Service (NIFRS) sent three appliances to the scene.
